After graduating from the University of Sydney in 1987, Jonathan completed an internship under Professor David Hutchins BVSc at the University of Sydney, Camden. Subsequently, he went into general equine practice in Canberra until commencing an equine surgical residency at Michigan State University, USA. Jonathan completed a 3 year surgical residency and a Master’s Degree in the evaluation and surgery of the horse’s upper respiratory tract. He was awarded the best resident scientific presentation by the American College of Veterinary Surgeons in 1993. He subsequently worked as an after hours emergency equine surgeon at Michigan State University and became a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons in 1994. He became a Registered Specialist in Equine Surgery (NSW) in 1995. Following this, he fulfilled a clinical appointment at Colorado State University before becoming the resident surgeon at the Randwick Equine Centre in Sydney, Australia in 1994.
Jonathan is a surgeon and partner of the Randwick Equine Centre where his practice includes referral surgery and lameness as well as routine racetrack practice. He is actively involved in the Randwick Equine Centre internship training which has trained over 20 interns that have gone to post-graduate residency programs and private practice. Jonathan has served as executive of the peak body representing horse veterinarians throughout Australia, Equine Veterinarians Australia (EVA), for 6 years and was EVA President in 2006. He was recipient of the AEVA Reginald Pascoe Senior Clinical Prize in 2000 and the EVA Award for Excellence in the Equine Veterinary Field (Provet Award) in 2008. He has authored and co-authored numerous referred scientific articles and book chapters. He writes regularly for equine magazines as well as giving scientific presentations. Jonathan has special interests in orthopaedic and upper respiratory tract surgery as well as the use of nuclear medicine in the diagnosis of lameness cases.
